Tonari no Totoro

Satsuki and her little sister Mei move with their father to an old house in the countryside so they can live closer to the hospital where their mother is recovering. The new home creaks, the fields stretch farther than the girls are used to, and small soot-like spirits seem to disappear whenever adults look too closely.

Mei soon follows tiny creatures into the forest and discovers Totoro, a huge, gentle spirit sleeping beneath an ancient tree. Satsuki eventually enters that secret world too, where a rainy bus stop can summon a forest guardian and a cat can become transportation. The magic does not remove the sisters' worry about their mother, but it gives them wonder, companionship, and unexpected help when ordinary childhood fears become too large to carry alone.
