Saya Kisaragi appears to live two ordinary lives: a cheerful student by day and a shrine maiden who hunts monstrous Elder Bairns whenever they threaten her quiet town. As the attacks grow more brutal, however, small contradictions begin to fracture the comfortable world she has always accepted as real.

Behind Saya's battles lies a carefully constructed secret involving the people closest to her, the creatures she kills, and a promise whose meaning has been hidden from her.
