On the frozen planet Coldfoot, prisoners are forced to mine the valuable energy-rich mineral known as Sig while the colony above appears orderly and safe. Jim is a young prison guard trying to do his job within that system until an accident strikes the mine and sends him down to investigate.

Deep underground, he finds workers under attack by mysterious creatures emerging from beneath the planet, and as the infestation spreads, mining facilities become sealed traps surrounded by ice and darkness. Jim, prisoners, and other survivors are forced to cooperate despite the system that once separated them, trying to understand what awakened the creatures and reach safety. Everything they discover below suggests that humanity has been digging into a place that was never as empty as they assumed.
