Fran has moved beyond the first stage of her life as a free adventurer beside the sentient sword she calls Teacher. Survival is no longer enough for the former slave: as a Black Cat, she wants to grow strong enough to prove that her people can evolve despite a long-held belief that they cannot. Teacher continues supporting her with the magic and skills he gathers, but new lands and stronger opponents increasingly demand that Fran rely on her own experience and determination rather than his power alone. Each battle deepens the bond between the girl and the weapon who has become both guardian and family, while carrying them closer to Fran's dream and to answers about the strange world in which Teacher was reborn.
