Jiro Horikoshi has dreamed of flying since childhood, but poor eyesight prevents him from becoming a pilot. He chooses another path into the sky instead: designing airplanes. Moving to Tokyo to study aeronautical engineering, his talent carries him into the center of Japan's aircraft industry through turbulent years stretching from the Great Kanto Earthquake toward war.

Along the way he reconnects with Naoko, a young woman first tied to him by a brief encounter during the earthquake, and finds a love that grows more precious as their time becomes more fragile. Yet the aircraft Jiro creates in pursuit of beauty are increasingly destined for combat, while illness threatens Naoko's life. Caught between creation and loss, he must face a painful question: can a beautiful dream remain beautiful when the world gives it a purpose he never wanted?
