Earthsea is falling out of balance: crops fail, magic weakens, and dragons appear where they should not. The archmage Sparrowhawk travels in search of the cause and encounters Arren, a fugitive prince carrying a crime he cannot understand and a darkness within himself he cannot escape. The boy joins him, and their journey eventually leads to a coastal town under the influence of Cob, a sorcerer so terrified of death that he is willing to tear apart the world's natural order to avoid it. With help from Tenar and the orphan Therru, Arren is forced to confront the fear he has been running from. The struggle in Earthsea is therefore not only against an evil magician, but against the desire to cling to life so desperately that life itself loses its meaning.
