After the fall of Stronghold 113, Ren Xiaosu continues fleeing with Yan Liuyuan and the people who have become his family in a world that shows little mercy to the weak. Their rescue of military leader Luo Lan gives them a path into Stronghold 109, where life appears safer and more orderly than the wilderness they left behind.

The walls, however, only hide a different kind of danger. Military factions, awakened powers, and competing interests inside the fortified cities make every decision more complicated. As Xiaosu's abilities grow and his influence expands, protecting his family becomes more than a matter of food and shelter. He must learn how this new order works before it consumes them as easily as the wasteland could.
