Akino begins work as a concierge at Hokkyoku Department Store, a luxury establishment whose customers are not humans but animals of every kind, including many extinct species treated as especially distinguished guests. Her job goes far beyond pointing them toward merchandise. Every visitor arrives with a different need, from finding the perfect gift to arranging a proposal or searching for something they cannot quite describe themselves.

Akino learns that good service means understanding what lies behind a customer's words, whether she is dealing with a shy bird, a demanding predator, or an animal carrying a memory no product can simply replace. Under the watchful eyes of her floor manager and coworkers, she tries to find what each visitor truly needs, even when it cannot be found on any shelf.
