Three discoveries from beyond the solar system transform civilization: control of gravity, faster-than-light communication, and the ability to materialize images into physical form. Humanity spreads across the solar system, believing it has entered an age of limitless prosperity. Less than a decade later, the interstellar object that delivered those gifts runs out of control and begins producing an aggressive self-replicating ecosystem known as the Apocalypse.

After three months of war, Earth is abandoned and the calendar is reset to A.A., After Apocalypse. Forty-five years later, children born on the Moon and in colonies have never known a world without the enemy surrounding humanity's lost home.
