Yuu Otosaka can seize control of another person's body for five seconds, an ability he shamelessly uses to cheat his way into a prestigious school. The scheme ends when Nao Tomori exposes him and forces him to transfer to Hoshinoumi Academy, a school secretly sheltering adolescents whose supernatural abilities appear during youth and are often unstable.

Yuu joins the student council, whose job is to locate other ability users before they abuse their powers or fall into the hands of researchers. At first he treats the missions as an irritating punishment, but every student they encounter reveals another cost attached to these gifts. As danger moves closer to Yuu and the people he has begun to value, his power stops being a selfish tool and becomes a responsibility that may demand choices he can never undo.
