Minoa Asagaya cannot forget a striking scene from something she watched as a child, but she has no idea what it was called. Her search for the answer brings her together with Arisu Kamiigusa, a wealthy classmate whose enthusiasm for anime is matched only by the depth of her knowledge. When even Arisu cannot identify Minoa's memory, the two decide to revive their school's dormant Anime Research Club.

The club soon attracts fans with wildly different tastes, from idols and light novels to mecha and critical analysis. Their noisy discussions, screenings, and arguments repeatedly put them at odds with the student council, but an even stranger problem gradually emerges: the conventions and logic of the stories they love begin leaking into their own reality.
