Young Marco lives with his family in Genoa until poverty forces his mother Anna to travel to Argentina for work. At first her letters keep the distance bearable, but when they suddenly stop arriving, Marco becomes convinced that something has happened to her.

Refusing to remain helpless, he leaves Italy with his little monkey Amedio and crosses the ocean in search of his mother. The journey carries him across unfamiliar cities and vast stretches of Argentina, where hardship, kindness from strangers, and repeated disappointments test how far a child can go for the person he loves most.
