Kafka Hibino cleans up kaiju remains after abandoning his childhood promise to join the Defense Force beside Mina Ashiro. Meeting her again pushes him to make one last attempt, only for his body to transform into the immensely powerful creature designated Kaiju No. 8. With Reno's help, Kafka hides his identity and enters the Defense Force selection process, hoping to finally stand beside Mina without exposing what he has become. When an intelligent kaiju attacks a Defense Force base, protecting his secret becomes less important than saving the people who have become his comrades.
