Japan's major horse races look solemn from the outside, filled with speed, tactics, and professional focus. Inside the heads of the jockeys, trainers, and spectators, something far stranger is usually happening. Across the Oaks, Japanese Derby, Yasuda Kinen, and Takarazuka Kinen, athletic competition becomes a comedy of private schemes, misunderstandings, romantic rivalry, and ambitions that sometimes have very little to do with the finish line. The crowd may see a tense race while the people involved experience an entirely different drama. Each event brings its own ridiculous problem, and one thing is consistently true: what lies behind those serious racing faces is much less dignified than anyone watching from the stands would guess.
