Two and a half years after the Lost JuLai catastrophe, Meryl Stryfe is still searching for Vash as she crosses Noman's Land with her new assistant, Milly Thompson. Plant robberies are spreading again, suggesting that Millions Knives's organization never truly vanished, while Vash hides under the name Eriks and tries to bury what remains of his old life.

A desperate message from the third ship draws him back into action just as a fleet from Earth contacts the planet, offering its people a future beyond endless survival.
