Little Red Bean finally receives what sounds like the perfect opportunity: a place in the imperial palace kitchen. There, he discovers a world of ingredients competing fiercely with one another, each dreaming of being chosen and eaten by the emperor so they can become the most celebrated food in the land.

Red Bean, who has spent so much of his life being left uneaten, does not share their excitement in quite the same way. His quiet presence gradually changes the other ingredients, until the real question is no longer who will be eaten first, but whether any of them should allow someone else to decide their fate at all.
