Patria ended its civil war by using forbidden technology to transform soldiers into beings with power far beyond ordinary humans. These "Incarnates" were celebrated as heroes, but peace left them trapped in bodies and abilities they could no longer always control. Before long, the people they saved began fearing them as beasts.

Hank, the former captain of the Incarnates, once made a promise with his comrades: if any of them lost their humanity, the others would end their life before they became a danger. As former soldiers begin breaking down, Hank sets out to honor that vow. Nancy Schaal Bancroft follows him seeking the truth behind her father's death and discovers what the war demanded from the men it later abandoned.
