After losing his son Tobio in an accident, brilliant scientist Umatarou Tenma builds an extraordinary robot in the boy's image. Atom possesses immense strength, advanced intelligence, and a child's capacity for wonder, but Tenma soon discovers the one thing his creation cannot do: grow into the son he lost. Unable to accept the difference, he casts Atom away.Atom eventually finds compassion in Professor Ochanomizu, who recognizes him as a life worthy of dignity rather than a machine to be owned. Equipped with remarkable powers, Atom begins protecting humans and robots from disasters, criminals, and one another. His greatest challenge is not defeating enemies, but finding a place in a society that depends on robots while still struggling to see them as beings with feelings and rights of their own.
