After failing to save Kurisu Makise, Rintarou Okabe breaks down, abandons his "Hououin Kyouma" persona, and refuses to attempt time travel again. He enters university and tries to live normally while carrying memories of timelines and deaths that none of his friends can fully share.

At a technology conference, he meets Kurisu's former colleagues Maho Hiyajo and Professor Alexis Leskinen and is introduced to Amadeus, an artificial intelligence built from Kurisu's memories and personality. Speaking to this digital version brings the voice he tried to forget back into his life. What first feels like a painful chance for closure soon connects to research and an international race capable of driving the world toward war, pulling Okabe back toward the time travel he swore to abandon.
