In Universal Century 0068, Zeon Zum Deikun dies as his campaign for the rights of space colonists begins transforming Side 3. His children Casval and Artesia escape with loyal protectors, but separation, false identities, and the growing power of the Zabi family destroy the life they knew.

Casval's intelligence and resentment carry him into military training, where he assumes the name Char Aznable and becomes an exceptional mobile-suit pilot.
