Richard is born into the House of York during the Wars of the Roses, intersex in a world that treats his body as an omen. His mother rejects him from childhood, while his father, the Duke of York, becomes the one person who gives him a sense of worth. Richard clings to his father's dream of England's throne and vows to help him achieve it at any cost. War turns the family into a chain of losses, alliances, and betrayals, while visions of Joan of Arc repeatedly tell Richard that he will destroy everyone around him. His encounter with King Henry VI creates a bond that does not fit the hatred expected between their sides. Caught between love, power, and the image of a 'demon' others imposed on him, Richard moves toward a crown that may grant recognition or consume everything he has left.
