When the servers of the virtual world YGGDRASIL are finally scheduled to shut down, guild master Momonga remains inside the Great Tomb of Nazarick until the last second, saying farewell to the place he and his absent companions built together. Midnight passes, but the world does not disappear. The non-player inhabitants of Nazarick have become living beings, and Momonga can no longer log out.

Taking the name Ainz Ooal Gown, he begins testing the limits of this unfamiliar reality while protecting Nazarick and searching for any sign that another player may have arrived with him.
