Synopsis
In a future where the wealthy buy mechanical bodies and centuries of life, Tetsuro Hoshino dreams of escaping the vulnerability of poverty. His journey to Megalopolis with his mother ends in tragedy when Count Mecha kills her during a hunt for human prey.
The mysterious Maetel rescues Tetsuro and offers him passage aboard the space train 999, provided they travel together. Each planetary stop introduces another way of living as he searches for the world said to give mechanical bodies away.
