In the summer of 2006, brothers Mutta and Hibito Nanba see a strange object streak toward the Moon and make a promise to become astronauts. Hibito chooses the Moon as his destination, while Mutta, insisting that the older brother should go farther, declares that he will reach Mars.

Years later, Hibito is already living the dream while Mutta has drifted into an ordinary career far removed from the future he once imagined. After losing his job, Mutta receives an unexpected chance to enter Japan's astronaut selection program. The childhood promise suddenly becomes possible again, but reaching space means confronting his failures, damaged confidence, and competitors who each have reasons of their own for looking beyond Earth.
