Makoto Naegi is admitted to Hope's Peak Academy despite lacking the extraordinary talent of its other students, chosen only as the Ultimate Lucky Student. He blacks out upon entering and wakes to find the building sealed, with fourteen equally gifted classmates trapped inside. Their captor, the mechanical bear Monokuma, announces the only path to graduation: murder another student and survive the class trial without being exposed. School life becomes a test of trust before it is ever a mystery.
