In 19th-century China, young Mao inherits an extraordinary instinct for cooking from his late mother, the celebrated “Fairy of Cuisine.” After proving his talent in a fierce culinary challenge, he is told that skill alone is not enough to carry on her legacy and sets out to learn from the finest kitchens across the country.

Every city brings new ingredients, techniques, friends, and rivals, while cooking contests can decide reputations, livelihoods, and even control of respected restaurants. As Mao pursues the rank of Super Chef, his journey gradually leads him toward the dangerous Underground Cooking Society, whose members are willing to use food and power for far darker purposes.
