Death Note

Brilliant high school student Light Yagami finds a notebook dropped into the human world by Ryuk, a bored god of death. Its rule is simple and horrifying: write a person's name while knowing their face, and that person dies. Light doubts it at first, then tests the notebook on criminals and discovers that its power is real. Rather than destroy it, he decides to purge crime and create the perfect society he imagines, while the public gives the unknown killer the name Kira.

The unexplained deaths attract the attention of the mysterious detective L, who quickly concludes that Kira is a human being who can be found rather than an incomprehensible force. Their pursuit becomes a battle of deception, deduction, and predicting the opponent's next move. The more Light tries to protect his identity and expand his control, the more boundaries he is willing to cross, until his dream of justice becomes a struggle in which he alone decides who deserves to live and who must die.
