Sterling North remembers the summer when he rescued a baby raccoon and named him Rascal. What begins as the joyful bond between a boy and an affectionate wild animal gradually becomes more complicated as Rascal grows and his instincts become harder to contain.

Against the changing life of rural Wisconsin, Sterling experiences friendship, family hardship, and the painful realization that loving a wild creature may eventually mean letting it return to the world where it belongs.
