After dying, a man meets a goddess who asks what he would like to become in his next life. There is one problem: the popular heroic roles are booked tens of thousands of years in advance. Rather than wait his turn, he starts exploiting loopholes in the reincarnation system and selecting forms nobody sensible would request, from a hero's rib to a hermit crab, a vegetable, or whatever else offers a faster route into another world.
