On her fifteenth birthday, Kagome Higurashi is dragged into the ancient well at her family's shrine and emerges 500 years in the past, in a Japan where demons roam beside warring humans. She soon learns that the Shikon Jewel, a powerful object coveted by countless creatures, has been reborn inside her.

When the jewel is shattered and its fragments scatter across the land, Kagome is forced into an uneasy partnership with Inuyasha, a half-demon whose past is tied to the shrine maiden Kikyo, a woman Kagome strangely resembles. Joined by Shippo, Miroku, and Sango, the pair set out to recover the shards before they are corrupted, while old grudges and hidden truths gradually turn their quest into something far more personal.
