Ten years after the battle with Unicron, Autobots and former Decepticon enemies have begun cooperating to mine Energon, a vital new energy source. Their uneasy peace is shattered when Alpha Q sends Terrorcons to steal Energon and uses Scorponok to advance a plan that could revive old horrors.

As Megatron returns and Unicron once again becomes part of the conflict, the war reignites around control of Energon. Human teenager Kicker joins the Autobots with a rare ability to sense the energy, becoming an important guide in a struggle where yesterday's alliances can change as quickly as the battlefield.
