Fruits Basket

After her mother's death, Tohru Honda tries desperately not to burden anyone and secretly lives in a tent until Yuki and Shigure Sohma discover her situation and invite her into their home. There she meets Kyo and accidentally learns the family's secret: certain Sohmas transform into animals of the Chinese zodiac when embraced by someone of the opposite sex.

The situation seems humorous at first, but the curse is tied to an isolated family and relationships that have left deep wounds on everyone involved. Through her stubborn kindness, Tohru enters the lives of Yuki, Kyo, and the other Sohmas and gives them a kind of acceptance they never expected. In return, she also begins confronting the grief hidden behind her own smile, while it becomes clear that breaking the curse will require far more than a simple wish.
