Major Motoko Kusanagi and Public Security Section 9 head into the ruins of Tokyo as the Posthumans become an increasingly dangerous threat to both networks and society. There they encounter a refugee group calling itself “N,” hostile American special forces, and new clues to a plan whose scale is far greater than the cybercrimes they first set out to stop. The crisis escalates when a hijacked nuclear submarine pushes the world toward the possibility of nuclear war. Surrounded by artificial intelligence, the endless Sustainable War, and a new kind of human intelligence they barely understand, Section 9 must uncover what the Posthumans actually want before there is no longer anything left to prevent.
