Kaiji Itou is left with an enormous debt after a former coworker uses him as a guarantor and disappears. With little money and no real future, Kaiji is offered an impossible way out by a debt collector: one night of gambling aboard the ship Espoir could erase everything he owes.

Once aboard, he discovers that the simple-looking games are engineered to make desperate people betray one another, and losing can mean far more than money; years of forced labor await those who fall deepest.
