Hi no Tori: Houou-hen

In Nara-period Japan, the gentle sculptor Akanemaru travels in search of the legendary Phoenix, hoping the immortal bird will inspire a masterpiece. His journey crosses that of Gaou, a one-eyed, one-armed bandit consumed by rage at a world that has shown him little mercy. Gaou attacks Akanemaru and leaves him badly injured, sending the two men down paths that could hardly seem more different.

Akanemaru rebuilds his life and rises through the world of Buddhist art, while Gaou's encounter with the monk Roben gradually turns his destructive strength toward sculpture. Years of ambition, suffering, compassion, and compromise transform both men until fate brings them together again as rival artists. Their contest is no longer merely about skill: each carving carries the weight of the lives they have led and the consequences they can no longer escape.
