Einar is captured after Danish raiders destroy his village and kill his family, then sold into slavery on Ketil's farm in Denmark. There he is offered a slow path toward freedom: cultivate new land until the harvest is valuable enough to buy himself back. His partner in the fields is Thorfinn, no longer the furious boy who lived for war and revenge. He is quiet, haunted by the people he killed, and unable to imagine any meaningful future. As the two clear trees and grow wheat, their friendship gives both men a chance to rebuild themselves. Yet the wider world of slavery, politics, and war will not leave the farm untouched forever, testing whether a life built without violence can survive.
