Mononoke Movie 1: Karakasa

Asa and Kame arrive on the same day to work inside the Ooku, the luxurious inner chambers reserved for the ruler’s women and forbidden to men. They quickly become friends, but life behind its decorated gates is governed by ranks, rituals, and expectations that slowly consume the individuality of everyone serving there. As an important ceremony approaches, tensions among the women begin rising.

When strange incidents disrupt the preparations, the mysterious Medicine Seller appears at the Ooku’s gates and insists that the trouble is not an ordinary human dispute. A Mononoke is taking shape from emotions buried within the palace, and he cannot destroy it until he discovers its Form, Truth, and Reason. To do that, he must uncover what the Ooku has hidden from itself before the umbrella hanging over everyone finally closes.
