After his grandfather's death, Shima carries grief he does not know how to put into words. When a photograph of his grandfather falls into the sea, he jumps after it without thinking and nearly drowns before being rescued by Isaki, a strange young man who soon reveals that he is a merman unable to remain away from water for long.

Isaki begins staying close to Shima, and his direct, unfamiliar presence gives the boy space to speak about loneliness and loss without feeling pitied. Gratitude becomes mutual attachment, but the difference between their worlds is not a small detail they can ignore. If they want to remain together, they must decide what “home” can mean for someone who belongs to land and someone who belongs to the sea.
