Ichigo Kurosaki has seen spirits since childhood, but he does not understand what that ability means until a Hollow attacks his family. Soul Reaper Rukia Kuchiki is injured protecting them and transfers part of her power to Ichigo so he can fight, only for him to take far more than she expected. Unable to return to Soul Society, Rukia leaves Ichigo acting in her place, purifying Hollows and guiding wandering souls onward. His friends soon awaken powers of their own, expanding his world from the streets of Karakura to the laws of Soul Society and conflicts far older than he is. What begins as protecting his family grows into a responsibility linking the living and the dead.
