Gintama

After aliens known as the Amanto conquer Japan and reduce the shogunate to a puppet government, swords are banned and the samurai lose their place in an Edo transformed by strange technology. Gintoki Sakata still carries a wooden sword and stubbornly lives by his own idea of what a samurai should be.

He runs Yorozuya, an odd-jobs business willing to accept nearly any request for money, alongside Shinpachi Shimura, the superhumanly strong Kagura, and eventually the enormous dog Sadaharu. A day may begin with finding a pet or collecting a debt and end in a fight with gangs, officials, or aliens. Beneath the absurdity and jokes, Gintoki carries a wartime past that explains why he clings to samurai values in a world that declared their era over.
