In the year 11945, Earth no longer belongs to humanity. An alien invasion and its army of Machine Lifeforms forced humans to retreat to the Moon, from where YoRHa android soldiers now wage a long war to reclaim the planet. Combat unit 2B descends alongside scanner 9S to carry out missions for the Council of Humanity and work with the resistance still fighting on the surface.

The machines they encounter do not always behave like mindless enemies. Some learn, speak, form communities, and imitate humanity in increasingly unsettling ways. Each mission exposes new contradictions in a war they were taught to see as simple. Between orders, forbidden memories, and buried truths, 2B and 9S move closer to answers that may change what their mission means and what they understand about their own existence.
