Years after the previous war ended, peace between Naturals and Coordinators remains fragile. Shinn Asuka, who lost his family during the fighting in Orb, has become a ZAFT mobile suit pilot aboard the Minerva. When stolen Gundams and a catastrophic colony drop ignite another global war, Athrun Zala is drawn back into military service and once again finds himself caught between nations, ideals, and people he cares about.

As Chairman Gilbert Durandal's influence grows, Shinn rises as a powerful warrior while Kira Yamato, Lacus Clyne, Cagalli, and the Archangel are pulled back into the conflict. Athrun watches former allies become opponents and supposed enemies reveal different truths, until Durandal unveils the Destiny Plan, a future that promises order by assigning every person a predetermined place.
