Two years after the last great war, Shinn Asuka serves ZAFT as the pilot of the new Impulse Gundam, carrying anger born from the day his family died in Orb. At Armory One, the theft of three prototype mobile suits pulls Athrun Zala and Orb representative Cagalli Yula Athha into the same crisis, just as the fragile peace between Coordinators and Naturals begins to break.

When the fall of Junius Seven ignites another global conflict, Shinn's talent makes him one of ZAFT's most important young pilots, while Athrun is drawn back into uniform and Kira Yamato eventually returns to battle aboard the Archangel.
