Mato Kuroi begins junior high with an open, energetic nature that soon draws her toward the quieter Yomi Takanashi. Despite their differences, the girls become inseparable, and Mato gives Yomi a blue star charm identical to her own. By the following year, however, Mato's growing friendship with basketball teammate Yuu leaves Yomi increasingly isolated.

Then Yomi vanishes. Far from their everyday world, the gun-wielding Black Rock Shooter crosses a desolate battlefield in pursuit of the eerie Dead Master. The emotions linking the two girls echo through this violent realm, and finding Yomi may require Mato to confront a connection she never knew existed.
