On her first day of junior high, cheerful Mato Kuroi becomes fascinated by the withdrawn Yomi Takanashi and patiently tries to befriend her. A shared interest finally breaks the distance between them, and their friendship begins to grow, but emotions become complicated as other relationships create jealousy, loneliness, and pain neither girl knows how to express.

Elsewhere, a silent warrior called Black Rock Shooter fights in a surreal world of impossible landscapes against figures such as Dead Master. The battles there are connected to the feelings of Mato, Yomi, and the girls around them, turning emotions that remain hidden in ordinary life into physical conflicts with consequences neither world can ignore.
