Haruka Nanase has loved water and swimming since childhood, when he won an elementary-school relay with Makoto, Nagisa, and Rin. Years later the four meet again, but Rin has returned from Australia changed and focused on one goal: proving he is faster than Haruka. The reunion pushes Haruka, Makoto, and Nagisa to establish the Iwatobi High School Swim Club, eventually bringing in Rei, an athlete who cannot yet swim but is fascinated by the beauty of movement. As training and competition intensify, racing Rin becomes more than comparing times. It forces the old friends to confront what happened to their bond and what it means for each of them to swim with others again.
