Haruka Nanase has reached the stage he once dreamed about: competing on the international level. Representing Japan, he travels to Sydney with Rin and Ikuya for the Swimming World Cup, carrying the memories and expectations of everyone who has shared the water with him. The athletes waiting there are unlike the rivals he knew at school, especially world champion Albert Volandel, whose overwhelming speed forces Haruka to confront the distance between loving freestyle and surviving among the best swimmers alive. As each competitor searches for the reason he continues to swim, training and ambition begin placing strain on old relationships. Haruka has always felt most himself in the water, but reaching the top may demand a version of himself his friends can no longer easily follow.
