Haikara-san ga Tooru Movie 1: Benio, Hana no 17-sai

Tokyo, 1918. Seventeen-year-old Benio Hanamura has no intention of becoming the quiet young lady society expects. She practices kendo, climbs trees, speaks her mind, and plans to choose her own future. Discovering that her family has arranged her engagement to army officer Shinobu Ijuin is therefore a complete outrage, especially because their first meetings have already given her every reason to dislike him.

Benio resists both the marriage and the traditions behind it, only to slowly realize that Shinobu is not the man she decided he was. As irritation gives way to more complicated feelings, the unrest of wartime begins reaching into their lives. What starts as a battle against an unwanted engagement becomes a test of independence, loyalty, and love in an era capable of separating people no matter what they choose.
