After torture destroys his last attempt to deny what he has become, Ken Kaneki accepts that he is no longer an ordinary human. Instead of returning to Anteiku and the friends who sheltered him, he joins Aogiri Tree, the militant ghoul organization that once abducted him, leaving his true motives unclear even to those who want to protect him.

Meanwhile, the Commission of Counter Ghoul intensifies its campaign against Tokyo's ghoul organizations. The pressure reaches Anteiku, placing the people who gave Kaneki a home directly in danger. Caught between growing power and uncertain loyalties, Kaneki enters battles that pull him further from the humanity he is still desperate not to lose completely.
