Naota Nandaba is a sixth grader in a boring town who insists on acting older than he really is. After his brother leaves for America, Naota remains close to his brother's former girlfriend Mamimi in a relationship he barely understands. Then a strange woman named Haruko runs him down with her Vespa, hits him with a bass guitar, and impossible things begin emerging from his head.

Haruko moves into his home, giant robots appear, and the enormous Medical Mechanica corporation becomes part of a conflict Naota never asked to join. Beneath the explosions, absurd comedy, and alien machinery, he is forced to confront jealousy, loneliness, attraction, and his obsession with seeming mature. Growing up, he discovers, is far stranger than simply pretending childhood no longer matters.
